Learn the basic rules of mermaids in my novel from how long they can stay underwater to which real life marine animals they are based. 

It's unlikely you will see the two in the same area at the same time.

Birds aren't the only animals who go south for the winter.

"You eat fish?" James asked, his mouth half open. 

Kiani tore into the fish's head, her golden eyes lingering on him, filled with confusion. 

"Yes, what else would I eat?" she asked. 

"Aren't fish friends?"

"Not the small ones."

"My grandmother says, a mermaid should never swim alone," Kiani said.

There's a big difference between the two, make sure you remember it.

Just because mermaids are part human that doesn't mean they are automatic apex predators...

Every mermaid pod has one to help the poor unfortunate souls who come their way.
